Please post your views on how a 'wider experience domain' is more enlightening (or the other way round) compared to a 'focussed approach' in your career path.

both have its own advantages and disadvantages:
if you aer passionate about what your interests are then its obvious to stay focussed to your feild, this satisfies your interests in career therefore you can enjoy what you do, and expertise is always in big demand, so it also depends on which industry and feild.. if the demand for that is high.. expertise counts big bucks
on the other hand wider experience is normally for someone who seeks change, has the thirst to learn.. wants to try in different domains to understand an overall view as everything is interconnected.. if the scenario is something that you do not learn properly about what u r working on it just does not make any sense.
if we take an example of marketing as a feild.. there are numerous spcializations under this.. there are loads of recruiters who would prefer someone with an overall marketing experience than a specific expertise.. simply because they would like somebody to handle situations 360 degree, its not that somethuing which is not my expertise rises up and i say i cant handle.. and u r out in this competitive world.

therefore wider experience is necessary provided you spread that from an expertise feild.. become perfect in what yopu do and spread across others but also grow deep in your focussed approach.

you do not need to be a master.. if u can tame all kind of horses u r a master of the master.

I did prefer being a multi tasker, but definately I firmly believe that one should specialize in atlease one field of marketing be it creative, BTL, Outdoors, Digital, Print or Television. In the long run the way there are innovations happening in the marketing domain, I believe that one should adept himself to these changes and explore its usage and implement it in his / her domain. Only then can one sustain himself in the long run.

Hi rudra, Vibha and monjit!

This is my first post on this website... And really interested by the topic which Rudra had raised.

Well, the replies from you both make to add some view of mine.

I dont have much experience, At the same time i feel i have great exposure (2years regorous marketing experience) thanks to my boss!!!!!!

I feel the career scale responds to the area of concentration.

To eloborate:

1. Many of them emerge out of business schools with no experience, So we really donot know where we fit into, Hence the right decision would be becoming "Jack of all"

2. Again after trial and error we arrive at some decision, say after 2 or three years - Hence this could be the domain choosing time, Like becoming "master of one"

3. Might be looking at my senior manager, I feel once you are above certain age and able to understand things properly, Definitely we would lookforward becoming something high, with lots of receommendations you would be chosen for/or (entrepreneur byself) might be again we need yo comeback to all-rounder attitude to handle all departments activities...

Am i right?

If you want to say something please do comment....

Bye,
rajesh chandra shekar
